Christmas 2012

Merry Christmas! I hope everyone is enjoying their holiday! We have had a very nice Christmas. This year my mom, dad, sister, and I celebrated Christmas on December 22nd. My sister has to work today, so we moved Christmas up a bit. It actually worked out nicely, allowing me to spend time with Chris's family today. We were also able to visit my parents (and sister before she went to work) today, too.

I'd thought today I would give you guys a home tour of my Christmas decorations.

O Christmas Tree Printable

Each year I like to add a little to my Christmas decor. This year I made something simple: a fun christmas tree printable. I was inspired by this christmas tree printable, but instead of a bible verse I wanted the lyrics of the song "O Christmas Tree".

Burlap & Ornament Wreath

For this year's Christmas wreath I initially had an idea using pearls, but Chris challenged me to use what I already had to make a wreath. I am proud to say that this wreath was made with out me having to buy a thing! (Of course I bought all of the stuff for something else at some point, but I was still proud.)

Ornament Trees

It is finally December! Which means I can put out my Christmas stuff! Christmas is definitely my favorite holiday. I love the atmosphere that comes with it. I also love that I am able to give back to my parents as my sister and my way of saying thank you to them for all they have done for us.

Last year I wanted to add to my Christmas decor and decided to make some ornament trees. I know these are all over the web but I just loved how they look and they seemed pretty easy to make.

Pumpkin Pastries

Who can believe that Thanksgiving is this week? Crazy right! I can’t believe the holidays are already here. Am I the only one or does it seem like 2012 has gone by really fast?

This year Chris and I are going to join all the crazies for Black Friday! This will be my first year. My family has never really been into it and so I guess that is why I have never gone. Plus I was always in school and would rather sleep on my extra day off.

We are going because we would like a new TV and are trying to find something affordable. I am also looking forward to browse everything else that will be marked down, like clothes and DVDs. It should be a real interesting experience.

With the holidays upon us I have really been craving pumpkin desserts. At Chocolate, Chocolate and More I found this great recipe for Brown Sugar Cheese Danish. I thought they looked delicious and I was inspired to create something similar but with a pumpkin center. A Google search led me to The Home Heart’s Pumpkin Pie Dip.

I altered the pumpkin pie dip recipe a bit and combined the two recipes together. This is what I got:

Polka Dot Ombre Painting

Do you guys remember me mentioning my gallery wall? If you don’t you can check it out here.

I’ve only had the one picture hanging there for a while now. I knew that I really needed to make more items for the gallery wall because one picture on a huge wall all by itself is depressing!

So as I’ve been surfing the web looking at everyone’s lovely blogs and whatnot I have kept my eye out for something I can make. That is how I came across the idea for this beauty:

10 Hot Chocolate Recipes

It's starting to get chillier here in Ohio and I love it. I can not wait for us to get our first big snow! I was hoping to go skiing last year but we missed out on any good snow due to a mild winter. I know that ski places can make their own snow, if it is cold enough, but it just isn't the same as real snow. Even better if it is actually snowing while you ski! Let's hope we can go this year. : )

Cold weather always makes me crave hot chocolate! Here are 10 super delicious looking hot chocolate recipes:

Toilet Paper Roll Stamped Frame

I have a lot of frames that I don’t like the style of anymore but just can’t get rid of. So I am always looking for new ways to repurpose them.  When I stumbled upon this post from Creative Carmella I was delighted. She used a toilet paper roll as a stamp for painting/stamping a canvas, which she put a photo on. What an awesome idea! I had paint, toilet paper rolls, but no canvas…hm… but then I remembered all my old frames. Ah ha! I could do something with this tutorial.

Six Layer Taco Dip

First, what do you think of my new blog makeover? I love it! Kim did an excellent job. She was very patient and so easy to work with. Her ability to create exactly what I wanted amazed me. If you are considering a makeover for your blog I fully recommend Kim (733design.com)!

Now on to the real subject of this post:

Big Announcement

After much consideration I have decided to change the name of my blog. There are a couple of reasons for this change. First is that the trademark and the .com of Life's Creative Journey already exists. I want my own slice of the internet, something that is not similar to any one else's. Second I didn't love the name: Life's Creative Journey. This gave me an opportunity to come up with something I really love and can own. So after much consideration the new name of my blog will be.... drum roll.....

Dishwasher Sign

Are you always asking the members of your household if the dishes are clean or dirty? I am! It gets real annoying when boyfriend {aka Chris} isn't home. Then I have to do the good ol' smell test. Although most of the time I don't rely on the smell test and run them anyway.

Chalkboard Labels

I'm sure you are reading this title and saying "Chalkboard labels? Come on Stephanie, we already know how to make those... just use your Silhouette or Cricut." Well, you know what ... I don't have one! But oh man, I would soooooo love one. I just can't really afford one right now... but we must have dreams. {If you would like to donate one to me, I will not object ; ),  just kidding!}

Fall & Halloween Decor Inspirations

As far as fall decorations go I do have a few things. One is my Grapevine Fall Wreath that I talked about last week. I also have a mini tablescape. Just a little something, something.

{Sorry for the horrible picture. Bad lighting. Bad camera. : \ } But that is IT. Those are all of my fall decorations AND I have no Halloween decorations.

Surfing different link parties has lead me to some awesome fall and Halloween crafts that are really inspiring me to get my craft on. I thought I'd share my favorites.

Mini Peanut Butter Pies

I think by now you know I will use any excuse to make some sweets! My excuse to make these yummy little babies was the last day of a student working in the lab for the summer. I know.... I am just now posting these! What can I say... life got in the way...

Grapevine Fall Wreath

I love the Fall! While Christmas is probably my favorite holiday, the Fall is probably my favorite season. I love the 70 degree days { =  windows open!} and chilly nights { = great sleeping with windows open!!}... I absolutely love it. : )

Framed Yarn-Wrapped Initials

I'm creating my first gallery wall! I'm so excited!

When I first thought about creating a gallery wall, I wanted to plan where each frame was going to go and what was going in each frame. But after months of a blank wall, I decided to throw that idea out the window! Instead I'm going to make it up as a go... be spontaneous! : )

For a while now, I've had an idea inspired by this pin on Pinterest.com {I can't find the original source : \ } and wanted to create something similar but with yarn wrapped initials for both Chris and I.  I figured this would be a great start to the gallery wall and why not center every other picture around our initials!

Pallet Accessory & Jewelry Holder

Earlier this summer my sister's best friend, Courtney {who is a good friend of mine too... yay for sisters having the same friends!} asked me to help her with a project, because she knows I like to craft. Her idea was to make an accessory and jewelry holder out of a pallet. We put our minds together and this is what we came up with:

Cheesecake Cupcakes

I'm sure you have figured out by now that I love desserts or anything sweet. Unfortunately, Chris does not feel the same. Usually he gets a craving for sweets when we have nothing, but when we do have sweets he doesn't want them! Go figure... all well... more for me. ; )

My most recent dessert is cheesecake cupcakes! {I adapted a recipe I found here.} Cupcakes are awesome because they are the perfect, individual size treat and they are easy to take to work {I'm trying not to eat everything... trying : ) }. I have a feeling I'm going to be making more of my favorite sweets in cupcake versions... get excited!

Pop-Tab Bracelet

Hey all, I have a treat for you guys today: my sister Samantha is helping with today's post! She's a pretty crafty person like me, actually she is more of an artist. Her real talent is drawling... she is amazing at it, though I may be bias. ; )

Anyway, she is here to show you guys how to make a pop tab bracelet (with my help writing it). Lets get started...

DIY Vases

We have a nice buffet in our dining space but not much is on it. While browsing through Pinterest I came across a few pins where they spray painted old vases or wine bottles, such as here and here. Perfect! I love to drink wine, so therefore had the bottles at hand. Here is what I did:

Shirt and Tie Origami

Father's Day is coming up and of course I wanted to do a fun craft for it, but what?... Lately I have been working on my origami skills thanks to a co-worker and friend of mine who found out that I like to craft and love origami; he happens to be Japanese, too : ). So when I found this I was like... Perfect! (Mine is a little different, though.)

Dresser Makeover

I'm back!

I know I haven't posted anything in a very long time, but I have been very busy lately. I have been working a lot and have been taking a few classes to enhance my crafting abilities. I really have missed blogging and I am sorry for my little hiatus, but I am back with full force and ready to share what I have been crafting while away!

For my first post back, I am pumped to share my first furniture make over!

Since I have been crafting a lot, I have been accumulating a lot of crafty stuff and it doesn't really have a home. Actually, my craft stuff does, sort of, have a home but it has become a very messy and unorganized home. Let me show you:

Peanut Butter Brownie Pie

You know I love dessert! Here is my most recent:

Basically, what you are going to do is make a peanut butter pie with brownie at the bottom. The original recipe used a brownie mix, but I like to make things from scratch. So I adapted my brownie recipe from my previous post, Peanut Butter Brownie Dessert

Jazzing Up Plastic Drawers

This is my vanity:

I use one of those cheap, plastic drawer organizers to hold all of my hair and make-up whatnot. It is pretty ugly but I usually don't mind because I have the fabric skirt to cover it up.

One day I found this blog post. She covered her drawers with scrapbook paper using mod podge and I wanted to try it on my vanity drawers. I thought... if it ended up not working out then they would still be covered by the fabric skirt, so why not try it out (plus I get to use mod podge for the first time!!).

Peanut Butter Banana Bread

You may be seeing a theme in my baking... peanut butter! Once I found out that my boyfriend loves peanut butter I have gone crazy with making peanut butter recipes. Mainly though, so I won't be the only one eating these baked goodies. So when I found a peanut butter banana bread recipe I figured he would love it. Here is the recipe:

Fun Fact Stars

I originally found the idea for these stars on this blog. She used them to write self encouragement phrases. When I saw them I thought... Fun Fact Stars!!! So I made some stars and wrote little fun facts in them. I put the finished stars in a jar in our spare bathroom for when guest come over. They see a jar that says "Please Take One and Open". They open up a star and read a random fun fact. I think they are good conversation starters, plus Chris and I like to be random. :)

Paper Leaves Display

In our apartment, we wanted to fill some dead space in our upstairs hallway. I had a small table to put there, but nothing to put on it. Then I one day I found this paper scrap tree online and I thought something like that would fill our dead space nicely. Here is how we (Chris helped!) made ours:

Ribbon-Hung Picture Frames

In our apartment we had some dead space in one of the hallways. I wanted to fill it with pictures of both my boyfriend's and my family members but I didn't just want to simply hang normal frames. Instead I wanted to do something like what I found on Michaels.com, which was just attaching ribbon to a frame and hanging the frame on a coat rack. So here is what I did:

What you need:
  • Frames
  • Paint
  • Paint brush
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Coat rack

For the coat rack I wanted something basic. I found a simple metal rack that could hold 3 frames and I bought 2. You could used a rack that had a wood backing (which is what they did on Michaels.com) or you could make your own by buying the wood and hooks.

I wanted gray frames but I didn't want to buy any. I already had a whole bunch that I wasn't using because I no longer liked their color. So I just bought some acrylic paint from Hobby Lobby and painted my old frames gray. I also used different sized frames to change things up a little.

My boyfriend and I picked out our pictures that we wanted to display. I then scanned them into our computer and re-printed them out in black and white. I thought this would make the photos match and would go nicely with the gray frames.

Next I figured out the order that I wanted the frames to go. Then I decided on the length of the ribbon just by holding the frame up to the wall and seeing what I thought looked best. I attached the ribbon to the frames using a glue gun.

I hung each frame one at a time so that I could see how I wanted the next one to look.

And done!

I am really happy with how it turned out. : )

I love walking by this display and seeing our families.

It was so easy and turned out great! We always get great comments on it when our friends and family stop over.

Antigua Throw

Since I taught myself how to crochet, I have only been doing small projects such as scarfs. So, I wanted to embark on a larger project: a blanket! I found this free pattern for an antigua throw on caron.com. It looked simple enough so I decided to make it.

Here are a couple pictures of what was on the website and what I made.

Closet Organization

We have this nice, big closet underneath our staircase. It functions as a coat/shoe closet and extra storage. Lately, though, it has kind of become a catch all. We store paper towels, toilet paper, the vacuum, ironing board, kitty litter and who knows what else. It has turned into an eye sore (well for me anyway, because we keep the door closed). So I decided something needs to be done about it.

I went to Home Depot and bought a whole bunch of organizational stuff! I got a shelving unit, shoe rack and a few baskets. Then I came home and assembled it all together.  In just over an hour I had a nicely organized closet.

Crochet Hook Case

I love to crochet and recently taught myself how to do it. For a newbie I have surprisingly accumulated a lot of hooks. I was thinking about buying a case for them, but then it dawned on me... I could make one! I thought surely there is some pattern out there. Lo and behold I found this! The pattern was not very hard for a novice, such as myself. The case is made as one piece but sort of contains 3 parts: a inside lining (with hook pockets), the outside cover and the edge piping. I used a different color for each part and added a button and strap. Here is this pattern:

Behind the Bed Wall Decor

My boyfriend and I moved in together at the beginning of last year. When it came time to decorate our apartment we decided that we didn't like much of the wall decor that was out there to buy, so we decided to make our own. This is what we made to go on the wall behind our bed:
