Shamrock Boutonnieres

I wanted to make something simple for Saint Patrick's Day, so when I found these little boutonnieres on MarthaStewart.com I thought.... Perfect!

What you need:
  • Cotton fabric scraps
  • Waxed paper
  • Liquid starch
  • Iron
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Floral wire
  • Glue gun
  • Green ribbon
  • Corsage pin
  • Shamrock template from MarthaStewart.com

Lay your cotton fabric scraps on the waxed paper and apply the liquid starch. Martha used liquid starch that she could paint on, but I couldn't find that type. I found a spray starch and it worked fine. Let the starch dry, then iron the fabric.

Next print out the shamrock template and cut out the shamrocks. You don't have to use the template, you could draw your own templates. I just used the already made templates because I am not much of an artist.

Using the shamrock templates, draw the shamrock outline on your starched fabric.

Cut out your fabric shamrocks. Fold each petal of the shamrocks in half lengthwise. I used my iron to get a nice fold.

Now to make the stems. Use what ever size floral wire you want, I can't remember what mine is ... maybe 24 or 22? Anyway, cut the floral wire into 7 inch strips. Fold the wire in half and twist the two ends together. I did this by holding the ends of my wire with pliers and twisted the loop end.

To attach the stems I used a low temperature hot glue gun. I put a drop of hot glue on the bottom center of the back of my shamrock and pressed the end of the stem in the glue (not the loop end).

Aren't they cute!

I then attached 3 of them together. First I crossed their stems and put a drop of glue where their stems crossed, to stick them to each other. Then I took a piece of ribbon and put it behind them. I put a drop of glue on the ribbon and pressed the crossed section into the glue.

I then tied the ribbon into a bow, which was harder than I thought. But I finally made a bow I liked.

Now I am no Martha, but I still think they are super cute!

Chris let me use him as a model :). I attached them to his shirt using a pin and it stayed pretty well.

So there... now you have a little boutonniere to wear on Saint Patrick's Day so you don't get pinched! Have fun with these.
