Shirt and Tie Origami

Father's Day is coming up and of course I wanted to do a fun craft for it, but what?... Lately I have been working on my origami skills thanks to a co-worker and friend of mine who found out that I like to craft and love origami; he happens to be Japanese, too : ). So when I found this I was like... Perfect! (Mine is a little different, though.)

What you need:
  • 15 cm x 15 cm Paper (Origami Paper is the best but anything will work)
  • Envelope or Bag
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick

Start with your paper. Place it on the color side down (if your paper is two different colors that is).

Fold your paper in half from top to bottom making a triangle (pictures 1 & 2). Fold in half again from right to left, then open up the paper (pictures 3 & 4).

Now make a right and left triangle with the points in the center (pictures 1 & 2). Fold in the outside edge from each side, lining the edges up with the center line (pictures 3 & 4)

Fold the top point down, making a little triangle on the top.

Flip your paper over. Do you see the line in the center (as shown by the arrow)? You are going to fold the top edge so it lines up with that center line (picture 2).

Now do you see where the point of the triangle meets the other folds (see white circle; picture 1)? You are going to fold the bottom edge of that triangle so that the point is in the crease of the new fold (picture 2). After you fold it, it should look like picture 3 from the front and picture 4 from the side.

Now, starting from the point that is circled fold the right side in at an angle.

After you do the previous fold it should look like picture 1. Next take the folded over part at the very top and sort of pop out the side of the fold (picture 2). Then press it down (picture 3). It should look like picture 4 when finished. This part is a little weird but you'll get it ; ).

Repeat that whole thing, starting from the angle fold from the point, on the left side.

Flip your paper over and you are done with your tie! Isn't it cute!

Now on to the shirt. I made mine out of an envelope but it could be made out of a paper bag too.

Start with your envelope facing you with the folded side up.

Take one end of the envelope and fold the top down a little bit (picture 1). Cut a little slit right along the base of the fold on each side (picture 2). Fold both of the corners of each cut piece together, so that the corners touch (pictures 3 & 4).

Next fold the top edges of each side along the red lines, making the shoulders ( pictures 1 & 2). Finally attach your tie under the collar using your glue and you are done!

Yay!... look how super cute that looks!

I thought this could be a fun craft for the little ones. And they now have something they can stick their card (or gift, if they made the bag version) for dad in!
