Homemade Twix Bars

It seems that I haven't talked much about food lately, so this week is sort of a food week.  Monday I showed you guys how to make Homemade Applesauce. To continue with the homemade theme I'd thought I show how to make Homemade Twix bars today.

At work, all of the ladies aways do a cookie exchange during the holidays. This year I wanted to do something other than cookies... homemade twix bars! The original recipe is from High Heels and Grills.

What you need:
  • 1 cup salted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups caramel {I used caramel bits}
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 3 cups chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 300°F. Grease a 9x13 inch pan.

In a medium bowl, beat butter, sugar, and vanilla. Add the flour.

Press the dough evenly into prepared pan. Prick pressed dough all over with a fork to allow even baking.

Bake 30-35 minutes or until the top and edges are lightly golden.  Immediately run a knife around edges to loosen. Cool completely.

Caramel Layer
Melt caramel and cream in a small saucepan over low heat.

Pour caramel over the cooled crust and set in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Chocolate Layer
Melt chocolate in the microwave using ten second increments with stirring.

Pour evenly over chilled caramel layer, spreading until it covers the entire surface.

Cool in refrigerator until the chocolate is set.

Don't they look great!
