DVD Organization

When I was a college student, my roommate and I {who turned out to be one of my best friends ~ yah Chelsea~} did not have a television. Neither one of us were big TV watchers and we felt it was unnecessary. But there were nights that I was very bored in the dorm and needed a study break. So I started buying DVDs to watch on my computer. And it hasn't stopped!

These days Chris and have two TVs but we don't watch cable. Regular cable is fine for us. We also have a subscription to Hulu to catch up on TV shows. But we do watch a lot of movies. I'm a sucker for a 5 dollar DVD bin. You never know what you may find!

Throughout the years I've collected lots of movies {over 200 actually!}. And DVD take up a lot of space. Case in point:

Thats two rows of DVDs per cubby! So I've always had my eye out for a DVD storage solution.

When I found this post on IHeart Organizing I was inspired and excited! A guest post {from Eat.Sleep.Decorate.} described a great way to organize DVDs by getting rid of the plastic cases! Here is what I did...

What you need:

  • DVDs
  • Plastic DVD sleeves
  • Bins
  • Scrap-booking paper
  • Stickers
  • Scissors
First I bought 4 bins to hold all the DVDs. I found the blue ones at The Container Store and the beige ones at Ikea {they have great texture, like burlap!}. Then I bought some plastic DVD sleeves. I tried my hardest to find clear ones but no one sold them. I was too impatient to order some, so I settled for colorful.

Next I took the movie cover from the hard, plastic DVD case and cut it so it would fit into the sleeve. This was actually Chris's idea and I loved it! That way you can still tell what movie it is without having to look at the actual DVD.

Then I placed the DVD and its cover picture into the sleeve. I did this over and over and over again! It took awhile.

They do look great!

I then placed them in the bins in alphabetical order. I used scrapbook paper and stickers to make tabs of each letter of the alphabet {I think Q was the only letter I didn't have a movie for}. To know what letters were in which bin I printed labels to stick in the label holder on the front of the boxes.

I love the result!

And I was able to actually put decor in that bookshelf in place of the DVDs!

It looks so much better. And my little bins double as decor!

Have you organized anything lately?!
