Deer Head Hoop Art

When I was a kid I used to have a few pen pals. I loved to send and receive actual mail. Mail that you could decorate and see the unique handwriting of the individual. So when I stumbled across The White Peach Blog's Pen Pal exchange, I knew I had to participate! The exchange involves sending a pen pal a letter and small gift once a month for year. For the month of January I wanted to make something for my pen pal, Katie. Based on the brief description of her I made a Deer Head Hoop Art. Here is how I made it:

What you need:
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Felt
  • Deer head silhouette
  • Image to be embroidered
  • Fabric
  • Fabric pen/pencil
  • Thread
  • Needle
  • Washi tape
  • Scissors

First, I found a deer head silhouette online that I liked, then printed it out and cut it out. I then traced the deer head silhouette onto brown felt and cut it out.

Next, I traced my hoop onto the fabric then added two inches all around for a little extra fabric. The fabric I used was thin, so I also used a plain white fabric as a liner.

I wanted to embroider Katie's name to the hoop art. To do this, I taped a print out of Katie's name to a window, then taped the fabric over the paper {similar to what I did for my Embroidery Art}. I next traced the word onto the fabric.

Once the word was traced onto the fabric, I sewed the word using a stem stitch with brown thread.

I didn't want to just have a plain embroidery hoop. So I wrapped it with washi tape that matched my fabric.

Next, I put the fabric in the hoop and hot glued the felt deer head onto the fabric.

To create a neat back, I clipped the fabric along the edge about 1 inch apart. Then I hot glued the flaps to the back of the fabric.

That's it!

I love how it turned out and I hope my pen pal did too!
